Mayor James Barsa

Mayor Barsa’s State of the Borough Address, January 3, 2018
Good Evening and Happy New Year.
First, I would like to congratulate Councilman Barry Scott on his successful re-election and welcome Councilman Paul Haberman as a new member to our team.  Paul, I look forward to working with you over the coming year.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all borough employees, department heads and professionals who keep the Borough of Norwood current and running smoothly on a daily basis.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the dedication and professionalism of Norwood EMS and Fire Department.  Thank you for always being there for us.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the numerous individuals who volunteer their time to the various boards and committees.  These individuals donate their time and energy to make Norwood the great town it is.
I especially want to thank my 2017 governing body who regardless of party affiliation always worked harmoniously in moving Norwood forward.
As we move into 2018 our first priority is to produce a municipal budget with an increase under 2%.  This is a challenge that will require hard decisions in the face of rising costs and unfunded mandates.
We continue to file grant applications to help us with some of the costs for improvements.  We made an application to Bergen County Open Space to install lights on our walking path.  The walking path is used daily by our residents and if we could light it without using the expensive overhead lights we would be saving money and offering a benefit to our neighbors.  We have applied to NJ Dept. of Transportation to pave Walnut Street under a new grant program for heavily traveled truck routes.  We also made application to Bergen County Community Development to help fund our senior activities and senior van.  Our hope is to expand the van services in the very near future.
Remember Norwood Day is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd beginning at 2:00 p.m.  It’s a great day for the community to come together for great food and music.  This day is made possible by the generous donations of you our residents and our borough professionals and who could forget the hot dogs and soda that is donated every year by Norwood Fire Company No. 1.  They stand out in the blazing heat every year cooking hot dogs for us.  Let’s show them our appreciation.
I wish you and your families a very happy and prosperous new year.
